Abstract
The overall goal is to develop encoding schemes that will provide the greatest speech recognition for subjects using cochlear prostheses. Essentially, the problem is one of matching the important characteristics of speech signals to the limited perceptual space associated with electroauditory stimulation. Because large individual differences occur with electrical stimulation, optimal encodings may need to be chosen on a subject-by-subject basis. Two general approaches are presently being taken to determine optimal encodings.
