Abstract
During the past three decades, agriculture in China has changed dramatically. Agricultural production units of individual peasant families of the 1950s were replaced by collective production organizations or people’s communes; and fossil fuel energy inputs in the form of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery were used to increase agricultural production. In fact, the total amount of fossil fuel used in Chinese agriculture rose from 7 X 1012 kcal in 1957 to 681 X 1012 kcal in 1978, nearly a 100-fold increase (Taylor, 198 1 ; Lu, 1982). Grain production in China at the same time rose from 113.2 million tons in 1949 to 332.4 million tons in 1979-about a 3-fold increase (Agricultural Almanac of China (AAC), 1980). Thus, a 100-fold increase in fossil fuel use has resulted in a 3-fold rise in total grain production in China.
