The preceding chapters provide us with a framework or context in which we can locate our own studies of the psychological impact of unemployment. The remaining chapters of this book will focus upon these investigations which began in the late 1970s and have continued throughout the 1980s. Most of these studies were concerned with the psychological impact of youth unemployment although, in recent years, the consequences of unemployment for older age groups have also been examined. As will become evident, I have addressed a wide range of questions in this research program using procedures that have become more sophisticated as the program developed.
