Retinopathy of Prematurity: Overview and Findings in the Anterior Segment of Affected Eyes

  • Chapter
Topics in Pediatrics

Abstract

Our understanding of the disease known as retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) has changed enormously since the 1950s. Even its name has been changed to the more appropriate “retinopathy of prematurity” (ROP), which emphasizes the current thinking that the disease is due mainly to the immaturity of the infant’s retina. The fibrotic changes characteristically seen behind the lens in the advanced stages of this disease, and for which the term retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) was given, are now thought to be a common end-stage manifestation of many diseases of the retina.
