Abstract

In mathematics, as in everyday life, one often speaks about relationships between objects and, in particular, of the idea of two objects being related or associated with each other in some way. In this chapter, we will study relations, a way of making precise the idea of an asssociation between objects. A relation will be defined to be a set of ordered pairs, the idea being that a relation will consist of exactly those ordered pairs (a, b) such that a is associated with b under whatever relationship we wish to study.
