Molecular Strategies of Pathogens and Host Plants

Abstract

The ability of a pathogen to multiply and incite disease in its host plant is determined by genes present both in the pathogen and the host. In recent years, the application of molecular genetic tools has resulted in major advances towards the identification and characterization of pathogeneticity-related genes from numerous phytopathogenic prokaryotes. Although biological functions for many of these genes remain generally ill-defined, there is growing optimism based on recent experimental evidence that a function for some of these genes will soon be determined. Concomitant with the rapid advances in this general area have been a number of timely review articles covering various aspects of the molecular genetics of plant pathogenic bacteria (Chatterjee et al., 1986; Daniels et al., 1988; Keen et al., 1988; Kotoujansky, 1987; Mills, 1985; and Panopoulos et al, 1985). This chapter briefly reviews recent published work on the molecular characterization of pathogenicity determinants of two bean pathogens, Pseudomonas syringae pvs. phaseolicola and syringae, as well as unpublished results from our laboratory that suggest a possible function of a pathogenicity gene common to both organisms.
