Abstract

The normal area of the mitral valve orifice is 4 to 6 cm2. Clinical symptoms of mitral stenosis are most likely to begin where the mitral orifice area is reduced to 1.5 cm2 or less, and severe symptomatic mitral stenosis is usually associated with narrowing of the orifice to 1 cm2 or less.
