Abstract

The hierarchy of the crystal families is illustrated in Figure 9.1. In this diagram, there are seven crystal systems that include subdivisions of Bravais lattices, point groups, glide planes, screw axes, and space groups. The rationale for this hierarchy is discussed in detail in the International Crystallography Tables [1983]. The symbols described in the following sections are based on this hierarchy. Other symbol systems are in use, as well, but this hierarchy of systems to lattices to groups is the most widely used in materials science.
