Abstract
Clomiphene citrate (CC) is a nonsteroidal triphenylethylene compound currently used as the first choice of treatment for induction of ovulation in anovulatory or oligoovulatory women. It is suitable in cases in which endogenous gonadotropin secretion is desirable for induction of ovulation. Structurally, it is related to the potent synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol. At the recommended doses in humans, CC is an antiestrogen. Although the exact mechanism of action of an antiestrogen is not yet clear, CC binds to multiple target organs through the estrogen receptor machinery (i.e., it competes with estrogens for the receptor binding sites). The threshold of the antiestrogen effects of CC varies among tissue sites and depends on individual tissue estrogen receptor concentrations.
