Abstract
The development of automatic control systems (ACS) for commercial electroslag remelting (ESR) has been conducted at the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute since 1978. During this time, considerable experience has been gained in constructing this kind of system, along with analyzing how such systems function in industrial use. In this chapter three examples of ACS are given to illustrate the various control structures that were developed for specifiic ESR furnaces and technologies. These ACS were built in the Kramatorsk Manufacturing Association (MA) NKMZ, in the Kiev MA “Bolshevik,” and in the Zhdanov metallurgical plant “Azovastal.”
