Abstract
Research in the field of electroslag remelting (ESR) and other related processes was started at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1966 with the construction of a small ESR furnace with either direct current or a 60-Hz, AC power supply for melting 100-mm diameter ingots. The furnace was used to analyze the chemical and electrochemical processes that occur during remelting and to develop methods for thermal modeling of ESR.
