Over 30 years have passed since the first commercial electroslag remelting (ESR) installations were introduced at the Zaporozhie “Dneprospetsstal” Plant and, later, at Firth Sterling in McKeesport.1 The Soviet installation was designed with a single stationary electrode; the American installation was the first to have replaceable electrodes.
