Abstract

The electroslag remelting (ESR) shop of the MA “Izhstal” was set up 25 years ago. At that time, there was only one R-909 furnace. Later, two additional R951 furnaces were installed. At the beginning of the 1970s, a new ESR shop was built, with OKB-1155A and OKB-1155B type furnaces, and it attained its designed output in 1977. At that time, the production of square ESR tool steel ingots with a cross section of 485 × 485 mm was characterized by the following coefficients: productivity of the remelting process, 500 kg/hour; specific power consumption, 1400KW-h/t; and material consumption coefficient, about 1.65 (ingot weight, 1350 kg; final product yield, 820 kg). In view of these figures, most of the development efforts at the MA were directed toward improving the efficiency of the process (reducing material and electric power consumption and increasing furnace productivity).
