Abstract
In this chapter I will review the literature in which anti-idiotypic (anti-Id) antibodies have been used to induce or prime for an antibody response to a carbohydrate determinant, whether a polysaccharide or an oligosaccharide side chain of a glycoprotein or a synthetic conjugate. In each case the subject will be discussed in terms of the ability of anti-idiotypes to stimulate a response and in terms of the data presented that suggest that the anti-idiotype might behave as an internal image of antigen or Ab2β (1). The criteria I will use to determine whether an anti-idiotype is an internal image are those first discussed with reference to vaccines by Nisonoff and colleagues (2, 3).
