Part of the book series: Santa Cruz Summer Workshops in Astronomy and Astrophysics ((SANTA CRUZ))

Abstract

The still unsolved puzzle of how to make a type II supernova explosion from the collapse of a massive star’s iron core, the detection of 19 neutrino events associated with SN 1987A in the 1MB and Kamiokande 2 experiments (BIONTA et al. [1], HIRATA et al. [2]) and, most currently, the idea of making nucleosynthesis by non- conservative scattering of neutrinos off heavy nuclei (EPSTEIN et al. [3]; WOOSLEY et al. [4]) keeps interest in neutrino emission from newly formed neutron stars very vivid.
