Towards an Understanding of the Progenitor Evolution of SN 1987A

Abstract

Out of the many attempts to model the progenitor evolution of SN 1987A (see reviews by Hillebrandt and Höflich, 1989; Arnett et al., 1989), only two kinds of models are still discussed in the context of the observations: one using “restricted convection” (see e.g. contributions of S. Woosley and T. Weaver to this volume), and another assuming substantial mixing of core material into the hydrogen envelope (cf. e.g. K. Nomoto, this volume). The basic drawback of both kinds of models is a lack of theoretical justification of the applied physics. However, stellar models involving just the standard physics apparently fail in reproducing the blue-red-blue evolution of the SN 1987A progenitor.
