Abstract

The overall energetics of the interstellar medium (ISM) axe governed largely by the outflow of energy from stars through the ISM to the intergalactic medium. This energy is in the form of radiation, winds, and supernova explosions; supernovae dominate the injection of kinetic energy into the ISM. Much of this energy is from massive stars, which are continually forming out of the ISM and which return most of their mass back to the ISM.
