Abstract
Foot problems are one of the most common reasons for hospitalization of patients with diabetes mellitus. The incidence of major amputation is approximately 1% per year for the diabetic population over the age of 65.1 Ischemia, often in combination with neuropathy and infection, is a major factor in the pathogenesis of diabetic foot problems. The purpose of this article is to describe the mechanisms leading to ischemia and to provide a plan for optimum clinical management.
