Abstract
In this chapter we discuss a 3D spherical AC electrical machine geometry as a technological background for the design of free (gimballess) gyro and gyro-inertial sensing instruments1. In such a system a rotation torque can be generated along with suspension and centering forces. These forces are applied to a free spherical rotor made of ferromagnetic material covered by conductive (or superconductive) material, or even made entirely of conductive material for small gyro sphere diameters in the range of 1 cm or less. These systems maintain the internal sphere in suspension due to a spherically traveling magnetic field and spinning due to a torque generated by the synchronic circumferential magnetic field. Principle system configurations are shown in Figs. 8.1 through 8.5.
