Abstract

The radionuclide bone scan is one of the most commonly performed examinations in nuclear medicine departments worldwide. This procedure has been improved continually over the past several decades by advances in both radiopharmaceuticals and imaging equipment. Currently, bone scanning is generally regarded as one of the most sensitive imaging studies available for detecting focal osseous abnormalities, and with the development of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), further refinement has been experienced. However, SPECT requires more attention to details of acquisition, processing, and interpretation. Detailed technical discussions of bone SPECT acquisition and processing have been the subjects of other publications and will not be covered here. This chapter is devoted to normal SPECT skeletal anatomy.
