Abstract

The genus Aegyptianella (47) is comprised of intraerythrocytic, heteroxenous parasites of amphibians, reptiles and birds. On the basis of their morphological and biological characteristics, these parasites were assigned to the order Rickettsiales. They were thereby included in the family Anaplasmataceae, along with the genera Anaplasma, Haemobartonella and Eperythrozoon, with which they share analogous structure, place of residence in their vertebrate host, and developmental biology (111, 121, 122, 156–160, 210). Members of the Anaplasmataceae are small, cell-wall-less, obligatory, hemotrophic prokaryotes which, however, do not fit comfortably with the rickettsiale as classically defined and are, therefore, now considered as phylogenetically unaffiliated bacteria (158). Whether and to what extent other intraerythrocytic parasites of poikilotherme vertebrates, such as Pirhemocyton, Toddia, Cytamoeba, Bertarellia, Immanoplasma, Haematractidium, Sauroplasma, Sauromella, Serpentoplasma, Tunetella, Haemohormidium (150), and Anaplasma, or Piroplasma — like agents of birds are related or identical to Aegyptianella has not yet been clarified.
