The cerebral hemispheres consist of a surface layer of cortical gray matter, a central core of subcortical white matter, and several subcortical gray matter masses embedded in the deeper portion of the white matter (the basal ganglia). Cerebropinal fluid filled ventricular cavities (the lateral ventricles) occupy the central portion of each hemisphere.
