Deltamethrin: Uses and Environmental Safety

Abstract

The Dalmatian pyrethrum, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium Visinii or Pyrethrium cinerariaefolium Trav., was used as a pesticide in China before the first century. During the nineteenth century, European farmers again began to use this substance (O’Brien 1967). In this plant toxin, nature provided chemists with a structural model from which to develop powerful synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, which are considered relatively safe. We shall limit our discussion to deltamethrin, a photostable pyrethroid synthesized by Elliot et al. in 1974.
