Abstract

After floundering around in several majors as an undergraduate student atGustavus Adolphus College in the early 1960s, I finally settled on psychology. It was my good fortune to take a social psychology course under James O. Whittaker who had recently completed his PhD at the University of Oklahoma under the direction of Muzafer Sherif. As a text, we used the Sherifs’ (1956) An Outline of Social Psychology, which described in some detail the Robbers Cave experiment on intergroup relations.

An earlier version of this paper was presented at a conference, “From Conflict to Cooperation,” held at George Washington University in June of 1989 under the to sponsorship of the Institute of noetic Sciences. The author wishes to thank Eric Rowlett and Nick Pollis for their insightful comments and suggestions.
