Abstract
Between the crystalline and the isotropic liquid many liquid crystal compounds exhibit two or more distinct mesophases with various degrees of translational and orientational order. These materials provide new thermodynamically stable phases and are excellent systems for studying melting processes, phase transitions, and critical phenomena. So far, more than 25 different mesophases have been identified among the liquid crystal compounds. Considerable experimental and theoretical effort has been aimed toward understanding the variety of physical phenomena related to various mesophases. Many monographs (e.g., deGennes, 1974; Chandrasekhar, 1977; Liebert, 1978; Luckhurst and Gray, 1979; Gray and Goodby, 1984; Prost, 1984; Pershan, 1988) have been written to present various aspects of liquid crystal phases and/or their phase transitions. In this chapter, we will concentrate on the thermal properties of stacked hexatic phases and phase transitions related to these phases which have been the center of numerous research activities in the past ten years.
