Intracranial Aneurysms in Children

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Principles of Pediatric Neurosurgery ((PRINCPEDIATR))

Abstract

The discovery of an intracranial aneurysm in children is a rare occurrence. The incidence of aneurysms in the pediatric population varies from 0.5% for Patel and Richardson1 to 3.1% for Ostergaard and Voldby2 (Table 10.1)1–6 Matson,7 in 1964, presented the first series of 15 cases of pediatric aneurysms. Following this only a few series were published. They are summarized in Table 10.2.1,2,4–28 Recently, we have collected 448 cases from the literature, including 21 cases observed in the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery in Marseilles. In this material, 316 cases are presumably of multifactorial origin, 32 are traumatic, and 48 are of mycotic origin. We studied (separately) 52 giant aneurysms, which raise different surgical problems.
