Abstract
Neuroimaging plays a crucial role in establishing a perspective on the potential for spinal cord recovery and/or regeneration in various clinical settings. Within the field of neuroimaging, it is essential to select the proper modality for the information needed, realizing that conventional (“plain film”) radiography is still the state of the art in addressing certain clinical problems, and, at the opposite extreme of the technological spectrum, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, MR contrast agents, MR angiography, MR spectroscopy and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning have their unique applications as well. In addressing the questions related to spinal cord recovery and/or regeneration, neuroimaging actually plays several different roles: (a) diagnostic initially, (b) therapeutic occasionally, with interventional procedures, and (c) prognostic, through radiographic monitoring of the clinical course.
