Abstract
Two fine heated rings of different diameters are placed concentrically in an air jet, providing an analogue of a line source pair experiment in grid turbulence (Warhaft 1984). The mixing of the two sources is determined by inference. The evaluation of the cross correlation coefficient,ρ, and the segregation coefficient, α, is found to be strongly dependent on where the rings are located relative to the jet origin. A particularly novel finding occurs when the rings are placed well inside the potential core (0.5 D from the jet). Here p is initially close to unity, then becomes negative and finally grows to unity by about x/d~10. The effect of the rings on the velocity field is also studied and it is shown that they suppress the turbulence intensity when placed close to the jet but have little effect on the turbulence when placed further downstream. The results, which are preliminary, are contrasted with more traditional methods of introducing scalars into jets, such as warming the jet relative to the ambient air.
