Extracting Nutrients from Plant Tissues

Abstract

When nutrients such as protein and energy are available in excess of maintenance requirements, animals use them for growth, reproduction, and building up body reserves. An ungulate which assimilates nutrients faster than its competitors will, all other things being equal, survive better and leave offspring which are more numerous or of better quality than those of its competitors. It will, therefore, be more successful in evolutionary terms.
