Abstract

Although the incidence of ovarian cancer is lower than that of cervical and endometrial cancers, its mortality rate is higher than that of cancers of the cervix and endometrium combined, indicating its lethal biologic behavior. The diagnostic yield by cervical cytology of ovarian and fallopian tube neoplasms is poor. Since most adnexal masses need to be resected or debulked for diagnosis or treatment, percutaneous fine needle aspiration (FNA) is not the primary diagnostic approach except for advanced neoplasms beyond exploration.
