Abstract
Several rust diseases occur on maize. The best studied is the common rust of maize caused by the basidiomycete Puccinia sorghi Schw. First described by Schweinitz on a seedling initially identified as sorghum, P. sorghi in fact does not grow on sorghum but produces uredia and telia on maize and closely related teosintes such as Zea mexicana, Z. perennis, and Z. diploperennis. Pycnial and aecial stages of the life cycle occur on several species of Oxalis, notably O. corniculata and O. europaea. Axenic culture of P. sorghi has not been successful (Maclean 1982).
