Abstract

Two remarkable pedigrees by René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur* (1683–1757) and Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis* (1698–1759) on polydactyly may be taken as the dawn of modern scientific genetics, at a time when the theory of heredity was dominated by the preformationists.
