Abstract

Knowledge of selenium in biology and human health is accumulating at a rapid rate. The application of immunological and molecular biological tools to the study of selenium has led to the recognition of several new selenoproteins in the recent past, and there are indications that many more will be discovered in the future. Success has been achieved in understanding how selenium is incorporated into proteins, and reasonable estimates of nutritional requirements for the element have been made. The purpose of this book is to present reviews relevant to selenium in biology and human health from the perspective of authors who are producing much of the new knowledge.
