The Endocrinology of the Adult Female Mosquito

Part of the book series: Advances in Disease Vector Research ((VECTOR,volume 10))

Abstract

Because of its medical importance, the mosquito is one of the most intensively studied insects. The reproductive endocrinology of the adult female is an important topic of current research in this area. This is so not only because of the medical importance of the animal, but also because mosquitoes provide many technical advantages for such research. The ease with which mosquitoes can be reared in large numbers, the cyclic nature of reproduction, and the simplicity of dissection all have contributed to the vast amount of information available on this topic. Thus despite its small size, the mosquito can hold its own against larger model insects such as the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta.
