Abstract
In this chapter, I will discuss infections acquired in nonmarine environments. Both natural fresh waters (lakes, ponds, rivers, streams) and manmade aquatic environments (swimming pools, hot-tubs, whirlpools, spas) may serve as the origin for numerous pathogenic microorganisms. I will limit consideration to infections associated more with immersion in aquatic environments than with ingesting them. Even with this limitation, however, the reader will appreciate the wide variety of potential pathogens which occasionally cause problems for patients taking their leisure in fresh water (Table 4.1).
