Abstract

The Philippines has a total land area of 30 million ha, of which the remaining forests today cover only 6.7 million ha, compared with about 17 million ha in 1934. Remaining forest cover includes about 984,000 ha of old-growth commercial forest and 3,455.8 million ha of second-growth forest. The majority of the remaining noncommercial native forest is represented by tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF), which occurs in the upper mountain slopes and peaks above 900 m elevation. This forest type is referred to as “mossy forest” in the Philippines.
