Abstract
Comparisons between California and Chile have formed one of the major foci for studies of convergent evolution, and the volumes edited by Thrower and Bradbury (1977) and Mooney (1977) have greatly influenced studies of convergence. The study by Glanz (1977) in the former volume provides the starting point for the present analysis, which considerably broadens the scope of the comparisons he made, and builds on another comparative study of small mammals in shrublands from Australia, California, and South Africa (Fox et al. 1985). Cody et al. (1977) drew their conclusions on the comparative study of small mammals in mediterranean shrublands from the work of Glanz (1977) and his earlier doctoral studies.
