Abstract
Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode found throughout the tropical and subtropical world. It is also present in certain temperate zones, including North America where it has been reported with a high frequency among Southeast Asian immigrants and in parts of Appalachia.1,3 Dogs and nonhuman primates can harbor Strongyloides, and there have been zoonotic outbreaks of this infection among animal handlers.2 S. stercoralis can exist in a nonparasitic, free-living state in the soil, so there are many potential sources of human infection with this pathogen.
