Abstract

The purpose of chondroplasty is to reduce pain and improve the function of a joint that has been damaged by trauma or an arthritic process (Magnuson 1941; Insall, 1967; Ewing, 1980; Sprague, 1981; Johnson, 1986). Laser chondroplasty, particularly 2.1 μm holmium:YAG laser chondroplasty, has distinct attractions in my opinion. In general, 2.1 μm holmium:YAG laser chondroplasty patients are satisfied. Second, the depth of penetration of the 2.1 μm holmium:YAG laser is easier to control than that with a mechanical device (Decklebaum et al., 1985; Hobbs et al., 1987; Burns and Nelson 1988; Walsh et al., 1988; Sherk 1990; Trauner, 1990; Burns, 1991). Third, the 2.1 μm holmium:YAG laser allows better immediate intraoperative appearance of the treated chondral surface than when mechanical tools are used.
