Abstract
Behind all our discussions about science is perhaps the biggest assumption of them all: that the universe is ordered. An ordered universe is one in which causes precede effects, so causality or predictability holds. In 1911, for example, in the face of emerging discontinuities such as those in Planck’s theory of cavity radiation, Poincaré asked anxiously, “Will discontinuity reign over the physical universe?” He hoped not.
