Abstract

The continuing rise in the incidence of breast cancer and the devastating progression of metastatic breast cancer have propelled the evaluation and consideration of the relationships between female hormones and the development, physiology, and pathology of the human female breast. Basic research is limited by the species-specific and organ-specific actions of female hormones, and the restrictions of in vivo (or tissue) studies. Multiple clinical analyses have confirmed the correlation or local recurrence, metastatic spread, and survival with tumor size at the time of diagnosis. It is apparent that the smaller the cancer at the time of diagnosis, the better the prognosis.
