Abstract
This paper reviews the current status of laser based whole field (PIV) and local (LDA) velocity instrumentation. Particle Image Velocimetry provides velocity information globally in a flow field, during a short duration in time. Laser Doppler Velocimetry, on the other hand, gives velocity information at a small measurement volume in space, as a function of time. The physical principles of both of these techniques are reviewed. The complementary nature of the information provided by PIV and LDA is emphasized. Current instrumentation available commercially are discussed in detail.
