Database Instruction for Nursing Students

Our nursing school graduates are entering health care settings that are increasingly saturated with computer applications. Due to curricular compression, very little time in core curricula is usually allotted to informatics content. If opportunities for teaching computer applications are limited, databases may be the most useful instructional focus area among all the generic computer applications. Other computer applications may be useful for certain nursing specialties (such as spreadsheets for nurse administrators), but every specialty can benefit from exposure to database management concepts. Databases are a particularly useful application for nursing students to assimilate since databases illustrate the computer’s ability to sift through enormous quantities of data and compile that unorganized data into relevant information. Since an enormous portion of our time is relegated to information handling, the computer’s time savings in this area may ultimately transform our roles.
