Abstract

In today’s rapidly changing environment, professional nurses face common dilemmas of producing a maximum of knowledge in a minimum of time, and maintaining knowledge of current advances within nursing and other healthcare disciplines. The explosion of scientific information makes it difficult for nurses to keep adequately informed. This problem is particularly acute for nurse researchers who must function as information specialists, yet often encounter difficulties in obtaining information about research in progress, and in establishing networks among other nurse researchers working in similar content areas. In addition, retrieval of relevant information is frequently hampered by lack of a universally accepted classification scheme to organize nursing’s knowledge. Although thousands of nurses conduct research today, no library serves as a comprehensive focal point for nursing research. This paper describes efforts to establish an International Nursing Library (INL) to address these information needs for nurses worldwide.
