Abstract

The present state of stereotactic surgery is the consequence of more than 80 years of evolution in experimental neurology, neuroimaging modalities, and, computer technology. The need for a method of exact intracranial localization and reproducible targeting was recognized long ago, but aside from the creation of several craniometric systems that were intended to relate different brain structures to visible or palpable cranial reference points, little progress was made until early in this century.
