Abstract

The use of outpatient surgery was implemented during the early 1980s as one method to control the rapidly increasing costs of medical care. Initially, such surgery was limited to minor procedures performed under local anesthesia, but over the last two decades the scope of ambulatory surgery has gradually been expanding. An increasing variety of procedures can now be performed in an ambulatory setting, even if a general anesthetic is required.
