Abstract
Orthopaedics has seen several breakthrough innovations in the past that changed the quality and possibilities for treatment of orthopaedic diseases and conditions. Orthopaedics was initially a nonoperative discipline until after several wars the need for more and more efficient surgical techniques for amputations became obvious. Primary stabilization and repair of injured bones and soft tissues has then been integrated into the field of orthopaedics. Plate osteosynthesis and refinement of soft tissue techniques built the basis for the development of minimally or noninvasive treatment options such as arthroscopic joint surgery or percutaneous plating and intramedullary nailing of fractures. Biomechanical analysis and testing have been of great importance for the development of these techniques. Toward the end of this century, these techniques have been further refined and again build the ground for the integration of yet another scientific discipline into the realm of orthopaedic surgery, biology. The following chapters in this book aim to provide a profound insight into gene therapy, one of the newest and most exciting aspects of applied biological principles in orthopaedics.
