Abstract

Noninvasive techniques for measuring body composition may play critical roles in the detection, prevention, and treatment of disease. Noninvasive techniques allow the study of musculoskeletal development, assist in defining the role that body tissue compartments play in the etiology of disease, and assist in defining the declines in structure associated with aging. Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is perhaps the most widely available technique for the assessment of soft tissue composition and bone mass. The widespread use of DXA has made this method a highly validated technique for body composition analysis, and it has often been referred to as a “reference standard.” Measurement of bone mass using DXA has been shown to be an important predictor of fracture risk (Wasnich 1985, Hui 1989, Gardsell 1991, Black 1992, Cummings 1993). Likewise, measurement of soft tissue mass and its distribution using DXA has a critical role in studying the pathogenesis and diagnosis of many diseases, as described elsewhere in this volume, and in references (Shizgal 1987, Kuczmarski 1989, Shepard 1989, Fredrix 1990, Bode 1991, Harrbo 1991, Pi-Sunyer 1991, Schwartz 1991, Binnets 1992, Ley 1992, Sjostrom 1992).
