Abstract

The response of an elastic material to stress is of broad scientific and engineering interest. Chapter 3 was concerned with a specific problem of this type. Another such problem is the spherical cap snap through problem (Keller and Reiss (1959)). In this problem one wishes to study the motion of a spherical, elastic cap, like half a tennis ball, when pressure is applied to its surface in order to make it invert, or turn inside out. Of fundamental interest in this problem is the cap’s position of unstable equilibrium.
