Abstract

Pediatric facial fractures are rare before 5 years of age. The incidence of facial bone fractures in the 1- to 5-yearold group has been reported to be 1.4% by Panagopoulos in 1947 and up to 4.8% by Rowe and Killey in their 1955 review of 55 fractures. MacLeannan noted that less. than 1% of all facial bone fractures occur in children under 6 years of age. When they do occur, they are more likely to be “green stick” in nature, but this is not always the case. Posnick et al. have recently reviewed a series of craniomaxillofacial fractures occurring at a large pediatric referral center. The mechanism of surgery location and position of facial fractures, pattern of facial injuries, soft tissue injuries, and any associated injuries to other organ systems were recorded and fracture management and complications were recorded (Tables 11.1–11.5).
